Top 5 Alternative Music Players for Android

Many audiophiles who use an Android phone as their mp3 player are a bit unsatisfied with default music application. For them, the stock application misses out on a lot of features that a modern music player should provide. If you’re one of them, then read on as we list the best alternatives for Android’s default music player.

Winamp: Winamp, the once-popular desktop app is now entering the competitive domain of mobile apps. Though there’s no dearth of music players on Android, Winamp does stand apart from the crowd, thanks to the impressive set of features it comes packed with. Apart from letting you play and manage music, Winamp offers features like iTunes library import, free SHOUTcast streaming, Last.fm scrobbling and more. One of the best things about Winamp is that it integrates so nicely with the Android system. The app listens to voice actions that are available on some devices and also lets you control the player while the screen is locked. Other features include free music downloads from Spinner, wireless sync with destkop app (only on Windows) and album art gesturing for track change. Overall, a great free alternative to the stock music application.

What’s unique about Poweramp is that it provides features that put it at par with any desktop music player. Though the app is not free, you can download the trial version and use it for 15 days.

MixZing: Deemed as the most advanced music player for Android, MixZing comes packed with an amazing number of features you won’t normally expect from a mobile app. Besides letting you play and manage your music, MixZing also tidies up your library by finding missing metadata like album art, song name and artist name for your tracks. When you start playing a track, MixZing allows you to lookup info for the current artist and song from various sources like Wikipedia and Google. Moreover, you can also find lyrics for the song without leaving the app. Another great thing about MixZing is that it lets you play OGG files, making it the perfect app for open format enthusiasts. With an equalizer, sleep timer, tag editor and a Genius-like music recommendation engine, MixZing undoubtedly is one of the best music apps out there for Android. MixZing is freely (with ads) available for download from the marketplace. For an ad-free experience, you can upgrade to the paid version

Songbird: The only open source application on this list is Songbird. This free application comes with a lot of great features you’ll already find on its desktop counterpart. Songbird comes with a clean and beautiful interface allowing users to find and play their favorite songs easily. If you use the desktop application, you can sync Songbird between your computer and smartphone without any hassles. When compared to other music players, Songbird does include some unique features that make it stand apart from the crowd. For example, Songbird integrates tightly with popular web services like Last.fm, Flickr, and even Facebook. What’s more, the app also includes matching homescreen widgets, Bluetooth car audio support, and podcasts support, making it the perfect open source replacement to the default music application. Songbird is completely free and open source and is available for download from the Android Marketplace.

Worthy Mention : Doubletwist

Doubletwist is a popular multimedia application famously known for bringing wireless syncing (airsync) to Android. Sporting a beautiful polished interface, this nifty app integrates tightly with the rest of the system, making it a good replacement to the default music app. Though Doubletwist is free, there are some features which require you to purchase upgrades. For example, features like wireless sync, media streaming ( from Xbox, PS3, Apple TV), and album art downloader are part of the premium suite. One turnoff about this app is that it doesn’t support wireless syncing with Linux. However, there’s already a post in the forums requesting an airsync plugin for Banshee. So, do make sure you vote up the idea if you’re a Linux user. Doubletwist can be freely downloaded from the Android Marketplace.

What about Cubed? Has scrobbling and an awesome coverflow-like viewing mode (except scrolls vertically) and doesn’t take up too much space oh and best of all it’s free!

Edit: Also, Songbird doesn’t seem to have any option to download album covers or even any option to change them, Cubed can download album covers and you have the option to choose a local one or downloaded one.

Just installed “Sensor music player”, and after trying every single others, it’s just the one I was looking for =)no extra features about music playing, but some terrific ways to control the player (especially to skip a track) using sensors !

I must admit I do not use PowerAmp amymore thanks to that new one =)

MixZing was EXACTLY what I was looking for. I’ve been frustrated with Winamp and the default Music app because they won’t browse folders or load them as playlists (without some wizardry beyond my ken, at least). Thanks for the post!

Seriously, is this a joke? The only music player even remotely useful on Android is PlayerPro, and it’s not even on this list…
