Session Buddy Is A Feature-Laden Session Manager For Chrome

Chrome, despite all its great features, lacks a decent session manager. Unlike Firefox wherein you can restore the previously closed tabs, Chrome users have to painfully sift through their history in order to revisit the sites they opened last time. Though many Chromies are quite used to doing that, it doesn’t really hurt having a powerful extension managing all sessions for them. Session Buddy is one such extension that will help Chrome users save, restore, and export a particular browsing session.

The extension, once installed, shows up as a neat little icon on the Chrome toolbar. Clicking on the icon opens up a new tab wherein you can manage your existing session or import an old one. To get started, simply press ‘s’ while you’re on the Session Buddy page; this will quickly save your existing session. You can then add or remove websites from a particular session by hovering over the names of individual sites and clicking on the ‘x’ icon that shows up on the far left.

As you start saving your sessions, they’ll show up in the ‘Saved Sessions’ list on the bottom-left corner of the page. Now, whenever you want to restore a session from the list, simply select it and press the ‘R’ key on your keyboard. This will quickly restore your previously saved session in a new Chrome window.

Session Buddy, apart from letting you save your existing sessions, also automatically captures a list of 10 of your most recent sessions. So, for example, whenever you close the browser, it will automatically save the open tabs as a separate session. Now, when you reopen the browser, you can easily restore all the closed tabs and windows to their previous state.

Though the extension pretty much does the job, there are a few weaknesses here and there. For example, every time you want to save or restore a session, you have to open the session management page in a separate tab. Furthermore, the keyboard shortcuts only work in the session management page and having to switch tabs is sometimes cumbersome. Apart from that, I see no other shortcomings in the extension and I’d recommend it to anyone who is looking for a decent session manager for Chrome.

I’ve never made the shift across from Firefox to Chrome. I know Chrome is meant to be faster, but I’ve always liked the various Firefox addons. Maybe it’s time to give Chrome a test ride.
